Note for Hammered Dulcimer Players
I’ve provided both an intermediate version for standard 16/15 hammered dulcimers and an advanced version for extended-range instruments. The advanced arrangement is still mostly playable on a 16/15 dulcimer. All melody notes and most accompaniment stay within range, but will need to make a few note substitutions.
Important: This piece uses a Bb5 in the melody, which most modern 16/15 dulcimers have. A Bb3 also appears in some chords—it enriches the harmony but isn’t required. If your dulcimer doesn’t have a Bb3, you can retune your B3 or use a different chord voicing.
Because dulcimer layouts vary—especially in the key of F—feel free to adjust the music as needed. Chord symbols are included to help you adapt the voicings and mapping to your instrument’s range and configuration.
Instrumentation and Performance Options
This arrangement is scored for hammered dulcimer, harp, violin (or alto flute), cello, and handbells. You may substitute piano for harp, and the handbells part can also be played on glockenspiel.
The music is highly adaptable—suitable for a full ensemble, smaller groups like a duet or trio, or even as a solo hammered dulcimer performance.
Note on Measures 45–56
In measures 45–56, the hammered dulcimer plays chords while the melody is handled by the violin or alto flute. If you’re performing solo—or as a duet with cello or harp—it’s fine to leave out the melody here since it is already familiar to the listener. If you’d prefer to include the melody, feel free to adapt this section as needed.
