This arrangement of “Away in a Manger” is featured on my album Hammered Dulcimer Christmas, Vol. II. I approached it with a lyrical touch, aiming to convey the melody as if singing through the instrument. The piece employs a rubato tempo with significant tempo variation, inviting expressive, nuanced playing.
It combines both hand alternating and hand independence techniques, making it an excellent choice for players comfortable with—or working to improve—hand independence. Since the melody is familiar and not overly advanced, it’s a valuable piece for developing this skill.
I’ve included chords to aid in learning the arrangement, and they can also be used when accompanied by another instrument, such as guitar, harp, or piano.
