  • Download includes both intermediate and advanced arrangements.
  • The intermediate arrangement is crafted for 16/15 dulcimers. (For those playing on a 15/14 dulcimer, simply substitute E6 with B5.)
  • The advanced arrangement is tailored for extended-range dulcimers. While most of the advanced arrangement is playable on a 15/14 dulcimer, performers will need to make note substitutions based on their instrument’s range and personal preference.

“Sakura Sakura” is featured on my album Pure Hammered Dulcimer. This beloved Japanese folk song celebrates the beauty of spring, when the sakura (cherry blossoms) are in full bloom. My first visit to Japan was in 2017 to record for the soundtrack of Mary and the Witch’s Flower. In April 2018, Stephanie and I returned to reconnect with our new friends in the hammered dulcimer community and at Studio Ponoc. During that trip, we were captivated by the breathtaking sakura blossoms surrounding Mount Fuji.

The advanced arrangement mirrors my performance as heard on Pure Hammered Dulcimer, incorporating moments of improvisation. Subtle variations naturally arise when I play it live or share it on YouTube.

This unique pentatonic scale, often called the “Sakura scale,” features the notes E, F, A, B, and C. Unlike the more familiar pentatonic scale derived from the diatonic scale, which consists of only whole steps, the Sakura scale includes two half steps (E-F and B-C), giving it a distinct, evocative, and hauntingly beautiful character.
